When you asked about books on a desert island...I first realized how much nonfiction I had been reading... and then I tried to remember novels that I had read that I would reread again and again...that didn't involve being read to small or medium sized children. So back to the original question: Riverside Shakespeare, Copplestone's History of Philosophy, and the Oxford English Dictionary unabridged.
Wow. I'm in some interesting company there. ;) What university is this related to, anyway?
Ha! Hi Brandon--this is Helena Bell, I'm a member of Codex where you popped in for a short while to talk about writing. And the University is Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Hey, Helena!
Ah, Codex. Keep meaning to go back there. I'm terrible with forums; I don't even go to my own all that often.
Thanks for recommending the book! This very well may be the first time myself and Toni Morrison in the same list....
I realize that this class focuses on fiction but I just finished an excellent book called "Our Band Could Be Your Life." This non-fiction work by Michael Azzerod chronicles the exploits of thirteen independent bands of the 1980's who paved the way for the popularity and commercial success of "alternative rock" in the 1990's. These bands include Minor Threat, the Minute Men, Mission of Burma, Black Flag, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr (who just released a new album)just to name a few. If your interested in these bands or rock n' roll history I would highly recommend giving this book a read. I would also recommend that everyone sample sections of the book as it exhibits expert descriptions of sound, something I find difficult.
