Ms. Bell,
Hey about these drafts that you would like us to write, is that 5 drafts of the same poem each day or 5 different drafts for different poems? i was slightly confused in class...

Ok, this is what I get for having my daughter help me...she said, "Mom, you can't use your REAL name when you blog!" So I chose "beatrice" ... Shakespeare, Dante, Goethe,etc...and she said, "Mom, 'x' is always better." So now I understand this is a private site and our own names are just fine...well, unless we can alter this...you all will just have to get used to me as "Beatrix"...a.k.a. ~Lori

I am a writer. The only problem is that I'm a news writer. News writing is very structured, technical and deals with the real and tangible. There is limited creativity allowed, but nonetheless, it is an art. The art of storytelling is what I have in journalism. However, I came into this class blind, and now I feel even more lost. Where has my creativity gone. This is my greatest obstacle-seperating journalsim from poetry. It takes me an hour to write one poem because my mind almost refuses to let go of the journalistic writing style I've worked so hard to attain. If anyone has any suggestions to help me over this hump, please share!

Journalism....some very great journalists have been great at fiction and creative nonficiton. Try reading some of the successful authors and maybe that will jog somethings. David Quammen. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Quammen.)for science and nature...in fact he edits an anthology of science writers. Also John McPhee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_mcphee) and( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Glass) This American Life has given voice to a lot of journalist, commentators, poets and story writers. I also recommend Selected Shorts ...another public radio show we dont get on WSIU. I'm so excited that we will be getting Terry Gross' Fresh Air very soon.
